Jackie Kunkel

Jackie has been a quilter since 1993 and has owned her own business, Canton Village Quilt Works since 2000. Beginning her business as a long arm quilter and then in 2009 adding an online quilt fabric shop. She has also been a quilt designer for magazines and fabric companies since 2009, a quilting Podcaster - Jackie's Quilting Chronicles, and a Certified Quiltworx.com (Judy Niemeyer) Instructor and Shop. Jackie travels throughout the country to lecture, do workshops and trunk shows.

We caught up with her and found out a wee bit about her:

How long have you been sewing? I have been sewing since 6 grade Home Economics class.  I learned how to make garments and actually still do!  I began quilting, though, in 1993, and haven’t stopped since.  It has become a passion and a great way for me to relax.

What kind of sewing do you like best?  Mostly, I enjoy traditional piecing.  But I am always up for any kind of challenge.  I love to learn new techniques and always strive to widen my “quilting horizons”.

Where are your favorite retreat places?  Interesting question, as a designer I don’t get to go on retreats for myself much any more.  But I do teach retreats!!!  Here are some of my favorite places to teach retreats.  Strong House Inn Bed and Breakfast in Vergennes, Vermont,  The Quilted Ewe in New Hartford, CT, Lollipops Quilt Shop in Florida the retreat is taught on Amelia Island.

How many sewing machines do you own? Ha!  Well…. a lot!!  Let’s see…. 7.  A girl never can have too many back up machines, right?

Who is your quilting idol - that person in the industry that you most admire? I would have to say that it would be Judy Niemeyer.  I have been following her since the late 1990's when I first visited a quilt shop in Montana and saw her early works and picked up one of her first printed patterns.  She creates designs that are just unmatched in the quilting world.  They are beautiful and so different than what is out there.  That is why I became one of her Certified Instructors.

As you can see, Jackie has a beautiful sewing space. I personally love her rug - so much that I had to have one for myself! What I love about this space is all the windows and I absolutely LOVE her design wall. Here are a few more close up shots of some of the favorite parts of her space:

Jackie's room is spacious with plenty of room for all her tools and even a long arm machine.

The heart of my studio, the double cutting table with storage underneath!  My favorite!

Two cutting tables is a quilt-maker dream! These units were purchased from IKEA and have wonderful drawers with clear fronts. Perfect!

My sewing station with my most favorite machine, my Designer Epic!

This is where I store all my teaching books.  Basically they are all my patterns stored in easy to use notebooks.

My design wall... what more can I say!  I love it!

My closet and where I store my fabric stash. This makes me smile!

Quilt tops that need to be quilted, my thread collections from Aurifil, and the books that I love most.

Under the long arm storage of my projects and some of my specialty fabric collections.
