Chris Hoover

Chris Hoover

Chris began quilting in 1989 when she made her first sampler quilt. Sewing a block a week quickly turned into sewing a block a day and soon sampler quilts and scrappy quilts became her all-consuming passion. “Quilting soothes my soul and has kept me sane many times over the years!” Her eclectic style is inspired by everything from color and texture to architecture and nature and she loves to share her passion speaking and teaching classes for quilt shops and guilds since 1999. Her designs have been seen in Quiltmania, Best Fat Quarter Quilts, Best Weekend Quilts and Quilts from Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks. She was a finalist in McCall’s 2012 Design Star competition.

“My designs may look complicated but they are easily broken down into simple elements. I encourage quilters to see beyond the color and fabric in a quilt and to imagine the possibilities of the design – how to make it suit their individual style.” Chris designs under the name Whirligig Designs and you can see more at here: www.whirligigdesigns.com.

Cat Nix

Cat Nix

As far back as she can remember Cat Nix has held needle and thread in hand. "I get such a charge from combining fabrics to create unique, dynamic designs! Absolute Joy fuels my creative expressions." Cat collaborated with Paula Nadelstern to develop the "Puzzle Quilt Block of the Month," which she has taught for several years. "I recognize in Cat a kindred spirit with a love for complex fabric," Paula writes. "She has a true grasp of my design sensibility. She strives to be an artist who uses the vocabulary of quilt making to create a distinctive and deliberate personal response."

“I have the best job in the world,” Cat says of her work with Anthology Fabrics.   A self proclaimed "fabri-holic", she proudly states, “I work with the best people and best fabric in the industry!” As Creative Director, Cat works with pattern designers, publishers, educators, business owners and shop owners to promote the "Artistry of Batiks" and use of Anthology Fabrics Batiks. She also serves as in-house pattern and project designer, working with Anthology Fabrics artisans in Indonesia to develop new fabric designs that can be used in all facets of quilting and sewing.

Cat resides with her family in Kansas City, Missouri.  She alwaysenjoys hangin' out with her son, stitch-time with her sister, nieces & nephew, and spoiling her pets. Cat teaches and lectures locally and beyond the metropolitan Kansas City area.

Projects

Chris Hoover Hanalei Bay

Chris Hoover Hanalei Bay

The first time Deb saw Hanalei Bay she knew it needed to be a featured project on a cruise to Hawaii. The beautiful design is reminiscent of the flora of the Hawaiian islands. Chris Hoover is an amazing designer and a wonderful teacher. She will teach you the basics of foundation paper piecing and will guide you through every phase of making this beautiful quilt. With this two-day clas you certainly might just be able to finish this one before we dock at our first port.

Finished Size: 53" x 75"

Cat Nix Inside Out

Cat Nix Inside Out

Several years ago, Cat asked her son what kind of quilt he wanted her to make for him.  His only response: “No frills this time, mom.”  Thus, Inside Out was born.  Bold in color, rich in luster, and glowing with luminosity, this quilt will wrap you up in style. This quilt was featured in the second edition of “Color Play” by Joen Wolfrom. During this two-day class with Cat you will have the pleasure of experiencing a really great teaching style. Cat is known for her patient attitude and putting her students at ease. The quilt patterns she produces are of the highest quality.

Finished Size: 54" x 71"

Day 7 & 8

Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii

The former whaling village, Lahaina preserves its 19th-century heritage alongside funky shops, boutiques, galleries and gourmet dining. It is also the gateway to the distinctive volcanic landscapes of Maui, known as the Valley Isle. Explore Haleakala Crater, a dormant volcanic crater Hawaiians once considered one of the most sacred places on the island. Haleakala Crater is the highest point on Maui at 10,023 feet above sea level, so you'll have unparalleled views of the island from the summit. The volcano last erupted in 1790. However, evidence of volcanic activity from long ago abounds in the stunning streaks of gray, red, yellow and black that mark the flow paths of lava, ash and cinder.

Day 9

Hilo, Hawaii

The Big Island. The Orchid Isle. The Volcano Island. You'd expect a place that has inspired so many descriptive nicknames to be a land of rare beauty and wonder. Such is the island of Hawaii. Its 4,050 square miles are home to the snow-capped, 14,000-foot peaks of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, the fiery landscape of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, vast macadamia nut plantations, black-sand beaches, orchid-filled forests and posh resorts. Explore the wonders of Kilauea Volcano up close on a walk through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You'll be amazed by the incredible beauty and power of this active volcano.

Day 10

Kailua Kona, Hawaii

Located along Hawaii's western shore, where the slopes of Mauna Loa and Hualalai meet the sea, the Kona Coast is a region of endless lava fields and golden Pacific sunsets. The clear waters are perfect for diving, snorkeling, and deep-sea fishing. At the heart of the Kona Coast lies the charming resort village of Kailua. Because two other "Kailuas" exist within the state, the Big Island's Kailua is often called Kailua-Kona for clarity. Kealakekua Bay, where Captain James Cook lost his life, is one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. The area is a state park and conservation site, teeming with undersea life. It's a great place for both experienced snorkelers and novices to explore the marine world.

Day 11

Kauai (Nawiliwili), Hawaii

The Garden Isle of Kauai is the tropical paradise that dreams are made of: a land of towering ocean cliffs and impossibly green valleys, pristine rain forests and cascading waterfalls as well as some of the world's most photographed beaches. Take a helicopter ride over Waimea Canyon, the valleys and cliffs of the Na Pali Coast, the Valley of the Lost Tribe, and the wettest spot on earth, the Waialeale Crater. Along the way, keep your eyes open for familiar scenery from popular movies, including Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Day 12

Honolulu, Hawaii

Our cruise will come to an end in Honolulu, Hawaii. Hawaii's capital is indeed the jewel city of the Pacific. From Diamond Head and the world-famous beaches of Waikiki, to the inspiring memorials of Pearl Harbor and the Punchbowl National Cemetery, to the only royal palace ever constructed on U.S. soil. By far the most popular destinations in Oahu, Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial are moving tributes to important historic events. Experience the serenity of the Punchbowl National Cemetery, featuring the "Courts of the Missing."
